Shops

OK Kiri, here we are.  What I think we agreed so far and a few more comments:

1. We're interested in building some row shops, as per your preferences stated in the GoS Christmas in July (2020) thread and in response to my building Fromes Cheese Shop for you.
2. We both agreed that we like the sort of shops we saw in pictures from Ludlow (link to some source pictures).  Ludlow's an old market town (there's a lovely market square) and is typical of this type of town in the west of England.  It has some really quaint streets in the centre but isn't full-blown half timber as in Chester or York (though there are some half timber buildings here and there).  It's a nice town, I've always liked it.  I think I was channeling Ludlow when I started thinking about making Market Bannaby - which is a new hood project which, tbh, hasn't moved far past the planning stage.  Maybe this will help me get started on the build.

I attach a lot file which is the sort of thing I use as a starting point when I build stuff like this.  It's just the most rough outline - the stone floor tiles measure off the build area which will be chopped off when we shrink the lot.  And I've put in the wall 'lugs' that will attach to the adjacent lot - measured to Fromes.  We can change that, of course, especially at the back.  I put four tiles of pavement at the front to give room for shop-front decor (for Fromes I mean) - this matches and will set, I'm afraid where the frontage must be if you want it consistent.  Anyway, this is where I would start each time if I was building more than one shop.

I think the next question would be what sort of shops do we want to build?  We could continue the comestibles theme and go for a butchers or fish shop maybe?  Or maybe old-fashioned things like an Ironmonger or drapers (I love those old words that no-one uses these days)?  Or perhaps the more conventional game-type thing like a toyshop or cafe?  We could do a variety of course.  What about you?  What would you like?

I've posted up a list of community lots I got from N99 that may spark some ideas.

I like the idea of having a row of comestibles, but ye olde fashioned shops from days long gone also tickles my fancy. Smile

Lets start with doing comestibles and see where it leads.

I think it would be really cool for Market Barnaby, and for Dillman's grove which could do with some shops. Smile

I had a look at that list and have had one or two thoughts about it myself - at first I thought, 'Blimey she wants to make an entire city neighbourhood' not just a row of shops but I understand now.  Yes, how about a fishmongers - mainly because I have some ideas for that?  I like colour themes for lots - how about blue-green (or turquoise) and white or green and white or maybe yellow?  I have several source pictures for Fromes - including this one.  I nearly made it yellow.  But that's the sort of thing I mean, a sort of touchstone colour for the lot to give it an initial character.

LOL yes. I tend to get excited and do ALL the resources. Smile I can't tell you how many ideas and pictures I had for my CiJ gift this year - I only did about 10% of it. Sorry if I scared you. I've got CC resource lists that I can put up as well. But maybe I should hold off so as not to overwhelm you?

I think a fish monger would be fabulous. Smile

I was thinking of maybe 3 shops - The cheese shop is one end, have another end shop, and maybe one or two middle shops.

I also like the shops to be somewhat functional, and was wondering what you thought about that?

Yes, four-five shops is a good place to start. Functional, definitely - I usually build ownable community lots because that's how I play but that's not usually a big issue. It's easy enough to convert lots to residential.

Ownable community lots is good. (I don't need them residential).

Hey Kiri,

Sorry - been having an odd week and am distracted - actually some pretty important news but I'll tell you about it later. I made some wallpapers yesterday for SimPearls to try and get me back to TS2 stuff and, as usual, had a million ideas only about 1% of which I managed to complete (maybe exaggerating a teensy bit there)!

If we think about a fish shop, there are various things to think about - but primarily in two parts: build and content.

What do you want to look at? As I built Fromes, maybe I should look at the build (need name and colour scheme to start with - also what build CC (I usually aim to keep down CC if I'm building for upload but it's long since I can build without CC altogether, EAxis stuff is too familiar and too boring)). Is there anything you'd like to include in the build design? I usually do downstairs as a shop and upstairs as a place for the owner. ooo, just thought, another lot (NOT this one) we could build would be a chippy - British chippy. Heh heh.

Do you want to think about content? What would you include in the shop? Is there existing CC that would work (I seem to remember there's some nice fish CC about)? Anything else? Here in the UK you often get lemons, bunches of (curly) parsley and samphire (yum yum). Maybe bottles or cans of Bouillabaisse or caviar, seaweed... stuff related to cooking/eating fish.

Regarding a name, I'm into languages and etymology and I tend to pick names that resonate in some way with me. Fromes just popped into my head but I liked it because 1. it is close to fromage (and French cheese is excellent of course) and makes me think of Frome in Somerset, so has west country (UK) vibes. For a fish shop .... let's have a think.

Also prawns and roll mop herrings, kippers and crabs (lobster) and stuff like that.

This is the sort of thing I'd think of with a fishmongers.

Those little price tags. Nice green tiles and a steel sink, cutting board. I see condiment sauces in the back too.

I've started to think about the build.  I thought a flat front since this is an 'inside' shop - i.e. one that is in the middle of the row.  Maybe with flat windows because I have an idea for that - those are MM Ergo two-tile windows.

What I can't decide on is whether we should give this one a balcony to match Fromes or just have a flat front.

I used the red phone box there because I realised I can't move the phone round the side to hide it as I often do with a middle row shop.  That phone box is a frame for the actual phone which fits inside. I used it in Polgannon.  It's old and was made by Maylin.  Actually maybe I should put that up for upload as I modified the file to make it visible from space (i.e. the neighbourhood).
